Kenny Slaught Explains Benefits Of Supporting Youth Suffering Trauma

Kenny Slaught supports Hospice of Santa Barbara because they maintain an active presence on local school campuses at all levels, from elementary school thru college. Volunteers visit these schools to organize weekly support groups for youth who have experienced traumatic or strenuous situations and require a safe place in which to process their thoughts and feelings. On-site services aim to build supportive atmospheres which encourage self-reflection and teach critical coping skills. These coping skills can help teenagers avoid drugs and alcohol, as well as additional forms of self-medication. In addition to working directly with children, the hospice volunteers provide training services to faculty and staff members covering how to interact with students who are dealing with trauma and how to handle student questions about death, particularly violent deaths and suicide. All 65 schools in the Hospice of Santa Barbara network depend on the organization around the clock to respond to a traumatic situation promptly and effectively.
