Smith left Harvard to become a bond trader, and relocated to Santa Barbara to retire after achieving success. However, he was surprised to see that locals loved the house he built. This drove him to continue designing for Santa Barbara. He brought materials from Spain and fused old and new styles in his designs. Smith is seen as a Santa Barbara founding father, and his works are praised for their beauty and simplicity. Numerous artists were inspired by him, and Kenny Slaught recognizes the keen eye to detail needed to design such amazing buildings.
